Today is D.E.A.R. Day – Drop Everything and Read in honor of Beverly Cleary’s birthday, April 12th. If you’re not familiar with the legendary author Beverly Cleary, you might know her characters: Beezus and Ramona (coming soon as a movie to theaters – but, cheese & crackers people… read the book FIRST!)
Growing up, I remember thinking that I had a lot in common with Ramona Quimby. I also thought the girl behind my house might have been the model for Beezus (and wished she was MY big sister) and knew a lot of boys who could have been Henry Huggins or his friends. Which means – that Beverly Cleary clearly knew a thing or two about kids and why her books will be with us for generations to come. I encourage you to visit her website at www.beverlyclearly.com to learn more and perhaps order books for your kids or grandkids (or the kids next door).
Today shouldn’t be the only day you Drop Everything and Read, but it’s a good day to start and a great habit to keep in the days to come (whether you're a kid or a kid-at-heart).
Happy D.E.A.R. Day to all!
