Not too long ago I came across a list of the 100 Best Words Ever. Seems you CAN Google anything, because that is exactly what I typed into the search bar. I happen to love words and wanted to know what others thought were the Best Words Ever. For me, the list of Best Words Ever changes, based on whatever is going on in my life at the time.
Last year was…interesting, to say the least, what with all of the drama that people brought to my table (including, but not limited to: my ex and his band of merry inner demons; the re-finance people and their magnifying glass of seemingly never-ending monetary minutiae; my folks and their increasing medical dramas that unfortunately comes with aging; and one person who I believe has lost his rubber handled safety grip on reality). With the rather large vat of lunacy I’d been served, I found I needed a better list of words to express the emotions that come with it. So, on went the Google Goggles in search of the Best Words Ever, to describe what seems to have been one of the Worst Years Ever. Here, are 22 of them:
- Discombobulate (Verb) Disconcert or confuse.
- Akimbo (Adverb) With hands on the hips and elbows turned outward.
- Stegophilist (Noun) Urban climbing/structuring, the act of climbing the outside of buildings.
- Indolent (Adj) Wanting to avoid activity or exertion; lazy.
- Kerfuffle (Noun) A commotion or fuss.
- Truculent (Adj) Eager or quick to argue or fight; aggressively defiant.
- Cudgel (Noun / Verb) A short thick stick used as a weapon / to beat with a cudgel.
- Unctuous (Adj) 1. Excessively or ingratiatingly flattering; oily. 2. Having a greasy or soapy feel.
- Threnody (Noun) A lament.
- Trounce (Verb) 1. Defeat heavily in a contest. 2. Rebuke or punish severely.
- Flummox (Verb) Perplex greatly; bewilder.
- Brouhaha (Noun) A noisy and overexcited critical response, display of interest, or trail of publicity.
- Uppity (Adj) Self-important; arrogant.
- Crapulent (Adj) Of or relating to the drinking of alcohol or drunkenness.
- Farrago (Noun) a confused mixture.
- Phantasmagoria (Noun) A sequence of real or imaginary images, like that seen in a dream.
- Punnet (Noun) A small light basket used as a measure for fruits.
- Poltroon (Noun) A coward.
- Flabbergast (Verb) Surprise greatly; astonish
- Bumptious (Adj) Self-assertive or proud to an irritating degree.
- Oleaginous (Adf) 1. Rich in, covered with, or producing oil; oil or greasy. 2. Exaggeratedly and distastefully complimentary; obsequious
- Skedaddle (Verb) Depart quickly or hurriedly; run away.
I could tell you my sad and sordid story using each and every one of those words (ALL of which apply, especially how events in my life could make anyone consider becoming a Stegophilist), but I think I’m just going to let you borrow this list to tell your own tales. Should you choose to do so, I hope YOU get to spread them out over the course of your lifetime. As for me, I’m going to indulge my indolent side (oh, like that even exists) and skedaddle, for now.
